00:00 Wow, it's July and it's already been a big year. So, in this video we're going to create a new template.
00:08 I'm gonna do it from scratch. This has been a while since I've done one of these videos, and I'm really excited to do more.
00:14 Just build from scratch. But this one's gonna be fun because it is an absolute BetterSheets member exclusive. For now. I mean, anyone who gets Big Year.
00:23 It's a totally free template. Uhm, already there's Big Year, which is the entire year in one glance. Uhm, there's a Holidays feature where if you go over to Settings, you can add dates and it'll highlight them, uhm, for you.
00:43 And then there is, so it'll highlight Holidays for you. There's Focus, which is literally just going to be one month, uh, one day highlighted, a little silly one.
00:56 There's a School, two School Calendars, one for each overlapping year of 2026. I'll be updating this later this year. After, uhm, the school year starts.
01:06 There's Tall, which is slightly different than, uhm, the Sideways. This is, uhm, is up and down, so January, February, March are across the top, and then all the days are down to the bottom.
01:25 Okay. Okay, there we go. Uh, now, we also have checkboxes on, uhm, each of the days, so across the whole thing it's exactly like Big Year, just the entire sheet it.
01:36 Has, uh, checkboxes. Tiny version, this is super printable, and actually there's even a smaller one, Mini, which is just literally the numbers.
01:44 I've used this, I've printed this out and used it as a habit tracker, just on paper, uhm, just knocking out the days.
01:53 I might add some cool, uhm, well, this is just an idea now, uh, to add something here, but the idea is I'm going to add a new template now.
02:02 So, if you're watching this video, you'll probably see the title, but, uhm, I'm going to add a new template. Not this, but this would be fun to do.
02:10 Uhm, I want to make a note for this later, uh, done. So, it's called Mini done but what it'll be is I wanted to I want to highlight if if the date is done and, like, black it out to see the whole year.
02:31 That's the idea here. Uhm, and what I'm going to do actually now is make a completely brand new one, which is not the Mini done.
02:41 I just thought I'd help. These build from scratch videos are probably very rollercoastery, very windy. Okay, let's get into this.
02:49 Okay, I want to do 5, 6, 7 across are going to be small. Small. Then I'm going to copy and paste this.
03:02 And the idea is I want to put a tiny little month calendar here, and then every day below it. Okay, so this needs to be on.
03:13 Um, merged, I think. Um, we might, we might do something else here. But yeah, this is the idea. Make a little mini calendar.
03:25 So this will be, um, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Actually, maybe Sunday. No, I guess, I guess this is one of those decisions I have to make eventually, but I'll make it now.
03:41 And it'll be Monday through Sunday, or probably should be Sunday through. Most calendars are actually Sunday through Saturday. Um, we can actually go look at a calendar and see.
04:00 This will be for, um, for, I guess, 2026, and then I'll update it later for 2027. Alright, um, the first is on a Thursday, but we don't really care about that because we have sort of some fun little hack here.
04:14 Um, but that's the idea. It's like, one, two, three. Mhm. And I want to do 12 of these before we get to the thing.
04:33 I just want to format this a little bit more. I'm going to use a different font. Um, that's fun, but not great.
04:46 Comfort, I think, is too, ah, Comfort might be great. I have a visual next to me of what I want it to look like, and I want to come back to that and try to explain it some more while I do this.
05:02 Ah, so it's going to have, it has to have the month here.
05:13 It'll be fully across the whole thing. Should be dark at the top, uhm, the color's really funky here, and this will be January.
05:33 I want to make it all caps though. Mmm, I don't really like that Comforta is so, uhm, clo- the letters are close together.
05:49 Let me get a- something with much more room, maybe? Let me look at more fonts. Is Geist in here? Geist is here.
06:01 Geist Mono, as well. Mmm, let's try Geist Mono. This is new fun, I was like, hmm, this This might look cool.
06:13 Let's get all of the geists. Geist Mono. Geist Mono looks small. Oh my god. Yeah, let's try Geist. Let's try Geist here as well.
06:36 Uhm, I sort of like Comfort up for that, more if it's just one letter. Let me make this a little bit bigger.
06:46 I might end up making this much smaller later. Oh, I want to put this as color as well. So white, text, and colored.
06:57 And then, I don't think I want any color here, except for the weekends. So I think we'll do something like this.
07:10 Why that is the case is because I sort of want to. I want it to match, to some degree, this.
07:17 What is this font? It is Quicksand. Hmm. Might turn back to Quicksand. I don't know what to call this yet.
07:25 So during this video, I'm going to be thinking of how, what to call this. And we need to figure out how to do the dates here.
07:34 Numbers. So I have this old template here. This is what the idea is. So I want to figure out how to do this mini-calendar for each one.
07:50 So let's, let's copy this over. Here. And say, okay, end of month, we're using today, which we don't want to do today.
08:02 Uhm. And then we're just adding seven. So, weekday, end of month.
08:16 So I guess we switch out today. So this is always this month. But this day is going to be January.
08:25 So, actually, we go date, 1-1. Actually, it's not 1. 2026. 1-1.
08:35 Ah. I think we do that. And, I'm just adding, hmm, this, plus 1, to J3.
09:13 Well, is that, is that the, I don't think this is correct. Okay, so what we have is this formula, which needs a 1, which needs a date.
09:37 However, in the interest of the fact that I've made BigGear very easy to update, I don't want this A1 to have the date.
09:49 In fact, what I want to do is go to BigGear here. This is, this B2 is the only one that has the, the January 1st date in it.
10:00 So I'm gonna call this first date. And this is a named range. I'm gonna go back to our new one.
10:09 Again, I haven't figured out a name for this yet. And instead of accessing that, we're gonna have this formula that's going to look at first date.
10:24 Instead of A1, first date. Uhm, and that is the correct date we want for Sunday.
10:39 Then, we need to format it into just a number. So, let's go to custom date and time. Uh, we do not want that.
10:50 The, anything other than the day. Do we want leading zero or not? Probably not, without, probably no leading zero. There we go.
11:01 Okay, now, now comes sort of the hard part. Not really hard part. But, if I copy paste this, it's not going to work.
11:11 I need to add a two here. But I want that format, uhm, paste format.
11:23 And then paste here, and three, four, and see it's gonna actually update. Five, six. Seven.
11:41 And now, I do equals this, plus seven. So we can get rid of this stuff here. That. and now we get the month okay so we might have to do a little bit of editing because now we have to sort of, uhm, put all of these together.
12:15 January, February, uhm, don't know. Don't know if this is going to work out beautifully or if there's going to be a pain in the butt.
12:26 I'm going to show gridlines, get rid of gridlines. And I still need to do something here. I don't want to do a full width.
12:38 I want actually this and this merged and then that all the way down, I think. We'll see that soon enough.
12:50 I think we need to do a little bit of some borders here for now. Small border, uh, very light, thin.
13:06 Let's do that. I don't necessarily want to make this. Border, but for now, we will do this. So that's the idea.
13:20 Now, February will look different. Will be different, right? I could also say this is a date. I'm sorry, this is equal to, first date.
13:40 And then, format it, custom date, uh, and then we go here and just select month and use full name. Apply.
14:02 Wonder if, ah, can't do it all caps I think. It's fine. Equals this plus one? No. Plus 30?
14:16 Plus 31? Is it gonna work all the way across? I don't know. We shall see. Okay, so we need to keep adding.
14:28 Uh, this is equal to this plus seven. Do that one. So we don't have to format it again. This is the month, right?
15:20 Pretty cool, right? Hmm, I think we can do that again. I wonder if I can copy and paste this, and if it is not working.
15:33 Bees. Oh, because it's going to go down to this one. So what if I do this? But, oh, I guess we just have to edit this to six.
15:55 Again, there might be a more elegant way to do this. But for right now, I just want to get through.
16:02 Oops. This, to see how it's going to actually look and feel, and then we can come back and edit this sort of later, if we want to.
16:18 Might be a little confusing with exactly the same formatting here. So maybe there's something about, like, if the month doesn't match this month.
16:30 There Let's make this a little bit smaller. Alright, we need to do the dates.
16:41 This is going to be, it's going to be one through whatever, which is actually super simple, I think. We sort of have, Oh, we don't have, we just, oh, yeah, this is the, uhm, ah, this is funny.
17:01 This is how to figure out if it's, uhm, leap year or not, or add the leap year if it's, eh, uhm, which we can definitely do later.
17:13 For now, I just want to sort of get this going, but we just need one. Do 31 for now, and delete everything else.
17:35 Again, we can copy paste this and then go in. And delete the months, the dates we don't need. For this particular template and this particular video, I don't want to labor too much over this.
17:49 But I do want to figure out, is this going to work? Just copy pasting. Oops, we want it to be, uhm, formatted.
18:16 Yes. Actually, let's do this. Copy this part. Doesn't get the, oh, I see.
18:36 These are not equal. That's why. Okay, here we go. It's a whole year. Gonna tweak it a little bit. I do want to do something with the dates and the formatting.
19:06 Oh, I think we want even more stuff here than just the number. We want the day of the week, and we want to keep the theme.
19:15 Where we're highlighting the weekends. Again, keep on thinking. I wonder what we're going to name this. It's not going to be mini.
19:26 It's going to be like mini-tall, or something very basic. Let's unmerge this for now. Unmerge this. And then merge these two.
19:41 Uh, hmm, hmm, hmm.
20:03 But we just format it differently. The format is the date. Date, but we put it as the abbreviation. Let's merge these.
20:51 This, plus one. However, I want to format this differently. There we go. So, there we go.
21:20 So, I think this will be the format for now. Nope. And then, format, conditional formatting.
21:38 Oh, we have, Sort of the idea here. Oh. Disgusting. Formulas. Oh. Well. Bitmuch. This might be simple for now.
22:11 Doing equals. Ah, or we can just copy-paste it. Hmm, We're looking at B2. So we're at B8. Here we go.
22:28 So we're looking at if B8, B8.
22:52 That's looking at the one just above it. It's a little finicky. But we do want to keep it on brand.
23:16 So far, with this weekday, if is blank, be 8. Oh, yeah, because C3 here is 7, which is Saturday. Add another rule.
23:33 Custom formula is, and this will be C4. and the same. Let's make it black text. Why am I clicking the wrong one?
23:50 There we go. Done. So, it shows the, uhm, highlighted the weekends. Cool. Do I have to, now I have to do that for each?
24:04 Column, right? However, this first date, this is funky, right? I really want to be like, OK, whatever is February 1st.
24:22 So it shouldn't be first date. It should be this. Well, you know it's going to always going to be February, right?
24:28 Let's get the format, and then figure it out. This is equal to this. And this date is, let's say, February this is not February 1st.
24:55 Well, hmm. We sort of are hacking this together. Cause I think we need one more row.
25:09 Or one, yeah, do we? Yep, right there. May. There we go. May needs it.
25:28 June doesn't. July, nope. August does.
25:40 Oops. Let me just do that.
25:52 Yep. September is okay. October is okay. November is okay. December. Okay, cool. Maybe we'll just, We'll get that highlighted.
26:14 Yeah, this might be a little finicky, and it might be one of the reasons why I haven't done this before, is because it is a bit finicky, and you sort of have to just come in and templatize it each time, each year.
26:22 Whereas, big year, I just have to update this one date, and everything falls in line. But I did do that.
26:28 I do that over the course of many iterations, so this wasn't one shot done, but we'll see how this goes.
26:34 If this lives on, oh, we can just, I think I have an idea here. I mean, we're just figuring out the date.
26:45 How to do February 1st, but we sort of know, hmmm, yeah, yeah, what we could do, honestly, is not even use first date here.
26:57 It's just put in, uhm, equals date, year is, whatever year we're in, month 1, day 1.
27:12 Uhm, this is going to be today. That is probably a way to do it, and now this is going to be column 2, so the month, oh, this is hilarious.
27:29 I could actually do this programmatically in some weird way, but it's going to be easier if I just copy-paste this instead of, 1, it's 2, and all of this is the same, there we go, but the 1 is messed up here, hmmm, I think it's because of the formatting.
28:04 let's look at Conditional Formatting, D9, J9, hmmm, Well, that Thursday is wrong, right?
28:39 That's what's wrong. Not the number, but the day, the day. OK, cool. So that fixes that. And I then just have to copy paste this over, right?
28:52 And change. 2 to 3. So this is the very boring part of building this live. You get to see me edit these very, very boring very slowly.
29:19 You see all the work done is just little iterations on, what's going on, five. Again, I bet, oh here, actually this is going to be a funny little, uh, change.
29:33 So this month is month of whatever this day is, actually. That's true. And then, I need to, this is the exact same.
29:47 So I bet, just changing this month up here. Is that going to do it? It looks like it's doing it.
30:10 This is amazing. See, just, just got to let it simmer for a moment, and it'll figure itself out. All right, so that's automatic now, based on these dates.
30:20 These dates are not the day here, but the month. We're getting the month from there. Maybe we do update the year in a different way than today.
30:29 Um, I have, I have thought of this, of like, hey, just put settings here, set your year, set your year and then it'll just be here which is 2026 for now.
30:53 Now, 2026, so that's B7 on settings and instead of this, we go settings, B7 with dollar signs.
31:17 Uhm, oh, we don't even need year, because that's just the year. And again, I think, like, this is not ideal, but if you're coming in here and trying to update this and you're like, oh, you see this, Thank you for us.
31:41 formula, and you're like, oh, it's just today, whatever, based on today, uhm, you'd be like, oh, I don't know how to update that.
31:50 But if you see settings B7, then, you know, oh, I just have to go into settings B7 and edit Oh, uhm, there.
32:03 So, Cool. Then the year is updatable by one year. And, and this is something I've been trying to think of, or not think of, but try to implement, oh, here, actually, I can show you this.
32:17 Command F, uh, year, today, and then search within formulas, just the sheet, and then replace all. There we go.
32:32 Done. Cool. So this is coming together really well, I think, to be honest. Uhm, I want to do one extra little thing here in the text, I think, is when it, when there's something filled in, when it's when it's not blank, have it highlighted.
32:57 Some, it's an extra little formatting, uhm, when it's, is not empty, just do this. Oh, god, I keep hitting that text up and over.
33:13 There. Done. Oh, um, Just done. And then copy and paste conditional formatting.
33:29 Command Y. Is that working? Nope. That's not working. I think we can just copy and paste. There we go. And I think that will work.
33:47 Just so that if there's some text there, it's also highlighted. It's like, oh, we have graduation. Boom. Perfect. One little line.
33:58 Many months here. January to December. And very printable, right? Bye. Bye. Download. PDF. Not that printable. I thought it'd be better.
34:13 Fit to width. Maybe fit. No. No. Uhm, we might need normal. We need to cut it off here and do three months at a time or something.
34:26 Maybe people will do the quarter. Well, actually, I like that. Wow, that's really cool, right? Maybe not cut off there, but that looks really nice.
34:33 Fun to print. Oh, I hope you're enjoying this video. We do have to clean up the dates down here.
34:51 I hope you didn't think I would forget it. Now I'm trying to think of what else. We need to delete or edit, uhm, I mean, it's not the end of the world if you see a 1 here.
35:01 It's 31 spaces. Alright, boohoo. Alright, uhm, let's see, what else can we do? I love that the weekends are still highlighted.
35:13 I wonder if we should highlight this section, too, of, But. I did do that extra thing, which is, if it's filled in, it's highlighted no matter where it is.
35:25 I think it's just weekends are fine. And, yeah, and the, it definitely looks and feels like this, right, except for the fact that this is quicksand text.
35:36 I think maybe we do that. We still haven't figured out a name for this yet, but I think I think we'd just do quicksand and call it a day.
35:45 Oh, and maybe bold. Yeah, bolding, that works. Let's see what bolding, oh, that works too. I think the size of the font is fine at 10 might not want to do much more Oh, it wasn't 10.
36:12 It's, it is 10 here, quicksand 10. But this should be more. Let's see what this, eh, it looks fine. Might make it a little smaller, 20.
36:27 Yeah, that's double this, that's Good, that's 10. And I do have this line, not line, but, uhm, I wonder, let me look at the reference that I was looking at.
36:43 Yeah, it's blank as well. I like no, no outlines, except here. Could even make that a little bit smaller. Or if we want, or less lighter?
36:56 More lighter? Oh, uh, yeah. It's really clear that this is February, right? Like, I don't have to put February here again.
37:05 I don't have to put even, Unless somebody wants to use this. Okay, this is an interesting idea. Yeah, uhm, put this here.
37:18 But definitely different, uhm, formatting. Do the text as this, and the background as this, and 10.
37:30 Uhm. I don't know, I, honestly, it didn't hurt it, it didn't really, uhm, improve it either, maybe, I like it at 10 little something extra I oh I might do this Uhm, to be honest, I sort of like it without this block, but I do get it.
38:28 Let's look at, what it would look like if we printed this. Again, should I download a PDF? Nah, it would be fit to height.
38:55 There. There. Oh, actually, over here.
39:12 Confirm breaks. Oof. That looks sweet. Except for, What is that line? Oh, that border. Oh, that border. Oh, that border.
39:21 Oh no. Oh no. Oh, and it's not even the whole, Ugh, fit to page breaks. Let's go edit those page breaks.
39:30 Maybe I missed something. Oh, yes, I did. Oh, that's unfortunate that the line would show up. on the left side.
39:46 Let's do something different. I wonder if doing this is helpful. No, now it's on the right side. Okay, okay, um, that makes me think I need to insert a column here, insert a column here, and, uh, resize these to, let's even do less 20.
40:11 I'm trying, I'm trying to insert. Again, you're You're seeing stuff. Step-by-step, the tiny little things we're doing to improve this for all kinds of uses and things, whoops, just inserting and making this a double-wide column, two columns, just so that we can print it well, easily, across quarters,
40:58 if somebody were to do that. It doesn't really affect anything inside, which is pretty cool. I think that's pretty fun.
41:06 The whole thing looks the same. God, again, what are we going to call this, like, column pillars? I think, I think a pillar is a It is a pillar of society, is one of our, this calendar.
41:26 Yeah, let's call it pillar. That's fun. Let's look at the row, ah, column width here. It's 29. Uh, I wonder if we can get away with 25.
41:41 One reason might be, that it's easier to, let's resize columns, 25.
41:54 Can I not redo that? Oh, okay, I'll just highlight them all. We might want to give this more space later, but for now, let's get away with 25.
42:15 In your own personal use of this, if you're going and grabbing this right away, maybe make this wider, and see what it looks like.
42:25 Oh. Got to do that all again. Not all of it, but, no. Hmm. I like, you know, why I like this is more date, more width can be seen.
43:02 More, more width, more months can be seen at once. Yes, this text here is going to be a little, like, okay, a word or two.
43:16 So, what I might do is create a copy. Do we duplicate this and call this Pillar Wide. And now, do exactly the opposite.
43:30 So, instead of 25, let's do 45. Whoa, way too much. And, and again, not too much for particular uses, but that looks better, resize.
43:43 Oh, and can I just copy-paste this? Ah, yes, look at that.
43:54 Just copy-paste this whole thing. So modular, so easy to update now. Why did I do it any other way? You know why I did it?
44:06 Because now I think I have to redo the, That's why I didn't do it, because these dates down here. Uhm, well, let's just take all of these, and, that fixes that.
44:28 Okay, we have our wider version. It still only gets a, a word or two. I might, maybe go wider, even more wider.
44:41 It's hard to tell on my screen, because I always have a different, crazy sort of, uhm, resolution. So I don't like to only say this viewport is the way to view it.
44:54 Some people have, like, crazy resolutions. On their videos, video? On their displays. Uhm, so they can see a lot more.
45:02 They can probably see, like, like this. They might be looking at it like this. And I'm like, oh, okay. Or, the other way, right?
45:10 This way. Uhm, let's, it's looking good. Honestly, I really like this new one. This is a good year. This is gonna be a good year.
45:19 This big year. I know it's July. I know I'm dropping this video for members. If you're watching this whole thing, I love you.
45:27 I hope you're sticking around. And hope, hopefully you go grab this now. Grab this sort of secret new template pillar.
45:34 I'll be, uhm, releasing it more and more in September, but it's available right now. It's in the big year, so if you go grab, uhm, bettersheets.co slash big year.
45:43 And get it, you'll get this, you'll copy this. I will obviously have to update this for 2027. Uhm, I'm just, I'm wondering if it's only this first week that matters.
45:55 Like, we will see, right? We will see how this goes. Uhm, yeah, I'm not, that's not for this video to talk through.
46:07 But, Uhm, if you're watching this whole thing and you want to ask a question about something, I, I sort of might come back in here and edit it a little bit, tweak it a bit.
46:17 Cause I'm, I'm not a fan of this top one having, uhm, the border. This row 9. I sort of want to say, no borders.
46:31 Uhm, obviously. We then need to put a bottom border in there. That's what we need to do. There, uh, I think that looks cleaner, to be honest.
46:48 Cleaner? Like, no, just nicer. It has this sort of free-flowing form between the bottom of this row. The date, and it's also, it's a copy, so I'm even of the idea of, don't have that.
47:01 Like, to be honest, this looks even better. But I get it. I, I, I think aesthetically there's reasons for all of this, but I'm going to leave it as, uhm, oops, there, uh, I'm going to leave it as actually with the border.
47:22 That is one weird thing that I feel like I would prefer without the border, or even without the text there at all.
47:28 However, I'm going to leave it here with the border, and maybe it'll, I think it matches, you know, one reason, if I have to say one reason why this works with the border, is that it matches the format, the shape of the top one.
47:44 So the top little, uhm, one, I almost want to add another row, I think that would be too much though.
47:52 I, I like this, I wonder what you'd think of this. Email me, Andrew at BetterSheets.co. Let me know what you think of this, good or bad, if you have any tweaks, if you have any questions, if you have any features you want to say, oh, yes, I want it that way, but, I want it this other way too, wide, cool
48:08 . And, look for this starting around September, October, November, uhm, I'll be pushing this new template this year. But, yeah, up until then, for July and August, members, you can watch this, and you can get this, this sneak peek.
